Church History
“In compiling the history of the Unicoi Church Of Christ [now Unicoi Christian Church], many people interviews and a lot of facts gathered; but as time passes, so do people with their valuable knowledge. With this in mind, please consider this a partial history of the Unicoi Church
Over time the building has changed and been updated and the church has been through ups and down. In fact, there was even a period during the depression years where the church had to close its doors in 1932. However, a year later the doors were re-opened in 1933.
Through the course of the decades, church members have dedicated & donated thousands upon thousands of dollars & work hours to establish the church that is here today. UCC has also had a long-standing connection with Milligan College (now University) &Emmanuel Christian Seminary since the early 1900’s.
God’s providential care has been seen here at Unicoi Christian Church, in the ups and downs, in the longevity of the church and its ministry for the Kingdom of God. It is an amazing thing to think about the many decades and generations that have come before us and prayed over the very spot that we are at right now.
..Roy S. Chevis, a minister of the Restoration Movement, was influential in establishing the church at Unicoi. He built a hotel in 1888and the assumption is that the body met in the hotel and in the many homes before the church building was built at a later date. The land for the church was bought in 1893... and the first church building was nothing but a four-walled meeting house and reflected the simplest of taste. Wood for the old wood stove had to be gathered each week in the mountains and transported to the church. Light was supplied by kerosine lamps.

God has placed us here in this spot in the town of Unicoi for His glory – to serve him and to serve those around us in the name of Jesus for His kingdom. A Little More About the History of Unicoi Christian Church We have a great church history class that was compiled and written by one of our long-time elders, Troy Gaddy.
